The Cat Lady was created as part of the Illustration II course, taught by Janet Menger, for the Graphic Design Program at Algonquin College. The assignment was to represent a modern vice or form of contemporary decadence digitally, in the style of the Art Nouveau artist Aubrey Beardsley.
I had decided to depict an older single woman who collects cats. The illustration process began with determining the layout and balance of black and white of the illustration. This was followed by sketching elements that could be reproduced in the style of Aubrey Beardsley — dotted lines, subtle japanese influence, large black spaces (seen in his early works), varying line widths (seen in his later works), and smug faces — and incorporating them appropriately throughout the outline.
